I "vasi comunicanti" della storia della fotografia

Sulla  spinta  della  forte emozione causata dalla  notizia  della
morte di Beaumont Newall, l'autrice di questo saggio ripercorre le
tappe   fondamentali   e   più  significative   della   biografia
intellettuale  e professionale dello studioso, sottolineando  ciò
che Newall è stato per la storia della fotografia e cosa per essa
può significare la sua scomparsa. Più in generale la studiosa si
interroga,  in un ideale e sottinteso raffronto con la  situazione
italiana,  sul  ruolo  e  la collocazione della  fotografia  nella
gerarchia    delle   discipline   storico-artistiche   all'interno
dell'università,  in un continente così vasto e  all'avanguardia
come sono gli Stati Uniti.

With  the  stimulus of the strong emotion caused by  the  news  of
Beaumont  Newall's  death, the author of  this  study  covers  the
fundamental  and  most significant stages in the intellectual  and
professional  biography  of the late scholar,  pointing  out  what
Newall  has  been  to  the  history of photography  and  what  his
disappearance  may mean. More generally, in an implied  comparison
with  the Italian situation, the author interrogates the role  and
the  location of the photograph in the hierarchy of the discipline
of art history within the vast and avant-garde context of the U.S.
university context.
