Immagini d'Africa. L'uso della fotografia giornalistica nella 
stampa

Premesso lo scarso interesse per l'Africa da  parte  della  stampa 
periodica, non solo italiana, l'autore entra piu' nel dettaglio ad 
analizzare   la   particolarita'   del    messaggio    fotografico 
giornalistico. A questo  proposito  rileva  un  uso  dell'immagine 
fotografica generico e poco rispettoso  del  vero,  troppo  spesso 
legato a una funzione puramente illustrativa. Presenta  e  discute 
due  esempi  di  uso  della  fotografia  che  vede  accomunati   i 
comportamenti di alcuni dei principali  quotidiani  italiani.  Per 
contro l'autore sottolinea  le  difficolta'  a  costruire  servizi 
fotografici validi per gli alti costi che comportano e la tendenza 
quindi dei fotografi e delle agenzie a fornire servizi "multiuso", 
buoni per tutte le occasioni.

Given the lack of  interest  in  Africa  as  demonstrated  by  the 
periodical press – and not just in Italy – the author goes into  a 
detailed analysis of the special nature of the message conveyed by 
journalistic photography. He finds a generic  use  of  the  medium 
that has little respect for the truth and  is  often  bound  to  a 
purely  illustrative  function.  He  presents  and  discusses  two 
examples of the use of photography that is shared by some  of  the 
major Italian dailies. The author emphasizes the  difficulties  in 
creating "valid" photographic stories because of  the  high  costs 
involved and the trend – prevailing among both  photographers  and 
agencies – of providing "multipurpose" shots that are "just  right 
for all occasions".
