Africa e fotografia

In questo saggio Grazia Neri ricostruisce e  commenta  in  maniera 
puntuale  la   nostra   immagine   dell'Africa,   affascinante   e 
contraddittoria,  come  emerge  dalle  tantissime  fotografie,  di 
occidentali ma anche di africani, che giornalmente pervengono alla 
sua agenzia a Milano e che sono conservate  nei  suo  archivi.  è 
un'immagine che rimanda agli  aspetti  paesaggistici  legati  alla 
bellezza selvaggia e incontaminata della natura, alla fauna,  alle 
testimonianze culturali, ai riti esotici,  ma  anche  ai  problemi 
sociali di lotte fratricide, di fame, di carestie, di  malattie  e 
di miserie. In appendice l'intervista a Gideon  Mendel  che  parla 
del suo lavoro di fotografo, dell'Africa che e' presente nelle sue 
fotografie, di cosa significa essere fotografo o  fare  fotografia 
in Africa.

In this article Grazia Neri reconstructs and comments on  the  way 
we see Africa – a fascinating and contradictory reality –  through 
the photographs by western and Africans photographers, that arrive 
at her Milan agency every day, and that she keeps in her archives. 
It is an image that  includes  the  landscapes  of  uncontaminated 
nature and its savage beauty, animals, culture and exotic rituals, 
as well as the social problems of fratricidal  struggles,  hunger, 
famine, misery and disease. The  appendix  contains  an  interview 
with Gideon Mendel who comments on his work as a photographer,  on 
Africa as portrayed in his photos  and  what  it  means  to  be  a 
photographer taking pictures in Africa.
