Le fotografie scattate da William H. Shokley possono essere 
interpretate come un testo visuale. Attraverso una breve 
analisi dell'album, dove immagini diverse sono riunite 
insieme senza un'apparente coerenza spazio-temporale, 
l'autore cerca di dimostrare come il rapporto fra Shokley e 
Angelo Luzzatti, al quale l'album è offerto come "dono", 
può essere compreso approfonditamente soltanto se le 
immagini sono viste come un tutto, meglio come un testo 
coerente che esprime una "costruzione visuale" soggettiva 
della Cina. Il significato del "dono", è inoltre 
sottolineato brevemente, rimanda alla teoria di Marcel 
Mauss.


The photos shot by William H.Shockley may be interpreted as 
a visual text. Through a short analysis of the album, where 
different images are gathered together without an apparent 
space-and-time coherence, the author tends to demonstrate 
how the relationship between Shockley and Angelo Luzzatti, 
to whom the "gift" is offered, may be deeply understood 
only if the images are seen as a whole, better as a 
coherent text representing a subjective "visual 
construction" of China. The meaning of the "gift" is also 
briefly underlined, referring to Marcel Mauss' theory.
