Nel contesto della storia cinese della fine dell'Ottocento 
e dei problemi che investirono la società civile culminati 
nell'insurrezione popolare guidata dai Boxer si colloca la 
documentazione fotografica riunita nell'album di cui si 
parla in questo saggio che l'ingegnere minerario inglese W. 
H. Shockley donò all'uomo d'affari italiano e amico Angelo 
Luzzatti. Le oltre 300 immagini che lo compongono 
riguardano per la gran parte le regioni dello Shansi e 
Shantung, della Manciuria e di altre zone del Nord-est 
della Cina, solo poche, ma ugualmente interessanti, si 
riferiscono alla Corea e ad alcuni territori nei pressi di 
San Francisco in California. Il profilo dei due personaggi 
e il riferimento ai fatti che fanno da cornice alle 
fotografie vengono ricostruiti con abbondanza di dettagli 
in questo saggio.


The photographic documentation in the album that the 
English mining engineer W. H. Shockley gave to his friend, 
the Italian businessman Angelo Luzzatti, are the subject of 
this essay. They fit into the context of Chinese history at 
the end of the nineteenth century along with the social 
problems that culminated in the Boxer Rebellion. The album 
contains over 300 pictures of mainly the Shansi and 
Shantung regions, Manchuria and other parts of North-
Eastern China. A few, but equally interesting photographs 
were taken in Korea and some areas near San Francisco, 
California. The essay draws a detailed picture of these two 
men and of the events that provided a framework for the 
photographs.
