Anatole France iniziò a scrivere "Il giglio rosso" nel 1893, 
nel corso della sua prima visita a Firenze in compagnia dell'amica
 M. me Leontine Armand de Caillavet. Come già prima di lui aveva 
fatto Bourget per il suo "Cosmopolis", Anatole France si mise in 
contatto con Giuseppe Primoli al quale chiese di realizzare una 
serie di fotografie che illustrassero le scene e i personaggi del 
romanzo. Presso la Fondazione Primoli sono conservate alcune 
lettere che testimoniano questo fatto. Non è stata invece ritrovata 
la copia del romanzo, con le fotografie intercalate alle pagine, 
della quale ci è pervenuta la descrizione fatta da Diego Angeli.
Nessuna traccia nemmeno delle fotografie; sono state ritrovate solo
quelle utilizzate per "Cosmopolis".


Anatole France started writing "The Red Lily" in 1893 during his 
first visit to Florence in the company of his friend M.me Leontine
Armand de Caillavet. Just as Bourget had done before him for his 
"Cosmopolis", Anatole France got in touch with Giuseppe Primoli 
and asked him to take a series of photographs to illustrate the 
scenes and characters in the novel. A number of letters testifying 
to this fact are conserved at the Fondazione Primoli. The copy of 
the novel with the photographs inserted between the pages has on 
the other hand not been found, although there is a description of
 this from Diego Angeli. There is also no trace of the photographs
themselves. Only those used for "Cosmopolis" have been found.
